January Alter

The winter in a time of reflection. A time to go back and consider what you accomplished in the previous year, what you learned, and what lessons you are seeking in the coming year. This month I experienced the loss of someone very close to me and my alter reflects the lessons he taught me and was created to help me reflect on what is important within my own life.

Symbolism of Objects:
- The table my husband made for me is round, symbolizing the equality of all items and elements placed upon it. It also represents the continued circle of life; a relevant symbol for me this month.
- Some months I may choose to use an alter cloth, but this month, my focus was about drilling down to the basics and considering what is really there, so I chose to omit the cloth for this month.

- The plant keeps me grounded and stable and the piece of crystal placed at it's center is there to encourage growth.
-  The shells represent the element of water and remind me that it is alright to feel and allow emotion to have a place in my life (although it is also important not to allow it to wash you away).
- Selinite is the large piece of stone at the center and it helps to facilitate clarity of mind and helps to facilitate the acceptance of lessons that still need to be addressed.
- Atop the selinite is a piece of black ribbon, torn in the Jewish tradition, to represent our loss of the patriarch of our family.
- Flanking the selinite is a picture of both my grandmother who always inspired me to look within and love without conditions and my grandfather, who reminded me of the importance of laughing at everything, even myself.
- Between the two images is a green candle: Green to represent health and love (two things I need during this time of reflection).
- The quartz wand is used in my Reiki practice to pinpoint dis-ease and help me to remove it for others and is placed on the alter to help me pinpoint the dis-ease within my auric field and work to mend it.
- The stone on the opposite side is apopyllite, which creates a connection between the physical and spiritual realms. It also encourages introspection and helps to facilitate the release of emotion (rather then suppressing it).
- Finally, the quartz pointed candle holder front center is there to hold the candle of remembrance, lit for my grandfather as the points send the energy up to the universe.

Each day I light the candles and consider all of the lessons my ancestors helped to teach me and reflect on what I need to bring about in my life today. I have placed it in a prominent location in my living room so that I can see it throughout the day and am reminded of the relevance of each item placed upon it.

What lessons have you learned in the past year? How can you apply them in your life today? What changes do you hope to make in the coming year and how can you remind yourself of these every day?
